How do I pronounce Giclée and what does it mean? Q: How do I pronounce Giclée and what does it mean? Pronounced "shee - clay", Giclée is a French word meaning "spray" and, in this case, refers to the inkjet method of applying ink. Q: What is Giclée printing? A giclée is a form of collectable fine art that ranks alongside lithographs and serigraphs. Giclées are digitally produced but not all digital prints can be classed as giclée. Giclée prints are produced by special, high resolution printers using pigmented, archival inks and can be considered to be as close to the original artwork as is currently achievable. Q: How stable are the prints? Will they fade in time? We use state-of-the-art Epson 7500 technology. Many inkjet inks are dye-based and possibly fugitive but Epson inks are pigment-based and completely stable. Lightfastness worries are a thing of the past Epson now guarantee that prints will not fade for 100 years. Fading, yellowing and premature ageing of prints are not to be found at Dace Digital. Q: If I am printing a Limited Edition do I have to print the entire edition at one time? No. We at Dace Digital recognise that you require prints when sales arise. We do not expect you to have store unsold prints where you risk damage and tie up your money. We can print small batches on demand and ship them to you our service is worldwide. Q: I paint with oils and sometimes with watercolours - can you accommodate me? Yes. At Dace Digital we stock a wide range of top-quality papers. We are an authorised Hahnemühle Print Bureau so you are able to have your work reproduced on a range of exceptional papers from 210g matt art paper to the very finest 335g Natural mould-made paper. And Dace Digital's use of latest Epson technology allows us to print to the highest standard on top-quality canvas. Q: Is the quality of the paper or canvas similar to that on which I work? The Hahnemühle collection includes mould-made, coated Watercolour papers and top-quality canvas specially treated for Inkjet Digital Fine Art printing. We only use the best quality papers. Q: Do I have control over the way my painting or drawing looks on the final print? Yes. Unlike the offset-lithographic process, Giclée printing gives you, the Artist, total control. There is little in your images, in their digital state, that cannot be changed or tuned to your complete satisfaction. Q: Do I have to send you my original artwork? We prefer to work from your original whenever possible so we can produce the closest match. However, our scanner is fully capable of scanning transparencies or negatives so you can have your artwork photographed locally (by a professional copy photographer and preferably 4"×5" or even 8"×10"). We can also accept your work on CD if you prefer - just have your artwork professionally scanned and send us the digital file on CD (TIFFs should be Apple Mac configured). If you are not sending us your original artwork, please include a good colour photograph to assist us in final colour-matching. Q: Do I have to order a minimum number of prints? No. We will produce a single print if that is what you require. And the ability to initially print just small number allows you the opportunity to test-market a new image at a realistic cost. Your image is stored on our system and/or CD and we can print more copies at any time you require them. Q: If I print an edition in batches, am I obliged to print the entire edition? No. If you currently use offset-litho, have printed the entire edition at one time and find you only have 250 customers for 650 prints you have a problem. But not with Dace Digital's Giclée printing - you print whatever you require at any one time and you are under no obligation to complete the printing of an edition if you initially over-estimated its sales potential. |
